I remember commenting at one of my high school reunions, “Dang, we have some really good-looking women in our class.” I eagerly awaited our next reunion; but, when it came, I had to ask, “What the heck happened?”
Sixteen, late sophomore year and early junior year (probably), I would think popular with any boy 14 to 18 (leaving pedophiles out of this), but the younger ones may not be sure why.
Years ago, while sitting in the food court at the mall I overheard a skinny teen girl make a snide comment to her friends about a young woman’s weight who was nearby. Well, the woman also heard it and turned to them saying “I may not be your ideal, but I am exactly your dad’s type.”. The young woman was quite beautiful and only slightly voluptuous. I very nearly snorted my coffee in laughter.
When I was in high school I weighed about 10 lbs more than I do now (found old school records when we cleared out mom’s house about 20 years ago when she went to assisted living) – not that I am anywhere near thin now.
I was not the kind of girl boys went crazy over – not only heavy but also too smart in schoolwork. I had a boyfriend my senior year – we had been friends for a couple of years and were in the same classes. (At my husband pushing me to do so, I recently contacted my old boyfriend on Facebook for the first time – eh.)
I met my husband in college. Again, we were friends first. I knew him from a writing class, but met him when his girlfriend brought him to the yearbook office. I think he had maybe another couple of dates with her and I went out once with another guy.
We are still best friends even over being lovers and spouses. Only been married coming up on 45 years – but add on a 2 year engagement, 4 years dating before that and a year and a half we knew each before same – and that is a long time for 2 people who on paper do not belong together to be together.

You could have wavy, auburn hair below your shoulders again Janis. Arlo might like that.

I wonder what got into her all of a sudden.

Don’t inquire too deeply into her romantic past. You might learn something that you don’t want to know. Besides, she’s with you now.
