Potlicker (or pot licker) is/was a derogatory term used in my lifetime in the religious bigotry that existed between Protestants and Catholics. Protestants called Catholics catlickers (see Wiktionary, s.v.), and potlicker (stupid, dull, low status person, etc.; see Urban Dictionary) was the retaliatory term used by Catholics against Protestants. Happily, such overt bigotry is for the most part now behind us, or at least quiescent.
And, moreover, not being much of a cook, I have always disliked potlucks and tried to avoid them….
