Mac likes to sit on the windowsill when I have the windows open. I have a window seat in one of my windows for the cats, but Mac doesn’t really trust it. It did fall once when he was on it, though I think he didn’t trust it before that.

I once slept on a windowsill. Of course, it was quite wide with air-conditioning built in.

We did a bit of foraging today — berry picking! (We do have lots of dried up spiders in the window sills, but I agree with Elvis on this: hard pass.) The road that runs parallel to the local creek are overgrown with wineberry canes. We picked a couple quarts in an hour, and will pick more tomorrow. For brunch, I do a thick slice of brioche, browned on both sides in a hot buttered skillet. I cover the toast with ricotta, top that with peach preserves, and then pile on whatever berries are in season. It was strawberries last month, and now its blueberries and wineberries.

Lightning Bug or Firefly? Here in Tampa it is Lightning Bug but I know people from out west (New Mexico, West Texas) who call them fireflies. What say y’all (or do you say “you guys”, “you all” or a Joe Pesci “Youse Guys”?)?

Last night was the running of the Lightning Bugs! First night out for them and there were hundreds and hundreds in the back acreage! It was a spectacular showing. Some years we don’t have many but last night, they rivaled the fireworks put on by the lake association behind us. It was just amazing. I love it. Hubs, Murphy, Loaner Cat and I sat on the back deck for an hour and just watched the dance.

I actually am not sure what Puck is “in”. I think the sill is a shelf at the bottom of a window, but this one looks as if inside the house, there’s a low wall between the window and the room, and Puck is behind that wall?

In an old house, which that is, I’m expecting a “sash” window – glass in a box frame which can be slid up and down – and maybe what I’m calling a wall, is to stop an air draught penetrating straight into the room. Whether the window is open or not…

And it’s different from Lupin’s “Starin’ Window” on June 9th.

All the cats, but most notably Hamilton, love the screened-in porch. There is a small table in the corner, just below the kneeling wall where the cats sit, with their heads just above the sill. Birds, squirrels, and the occasional deer come up very close to the porch, and the cats love it.

    Since when are fireflies delicious?

They are oily and smell horrible.

Who would want to snack on a flying glow stick?

Be careful, Puck. Someone could easily open that window without looking. Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything. A glowing stomach would certainly, be a neat trait for his cleric character.

Some people revisit their childhood by watching Looney Tunes. I’m revisiting my childhood by having three significant medical procedures within 14 months.

Last year I fell and sprained my wrist. Several months later, it wasn’t getting better, so I reached out to an orthopedist who specializes in the hand and arm. Turns out I have … not a tumor, but a lump of fibrous tissue of some kind … in my wrist. Also, I appear to be missing actual pieces of my wrist. The working theory is that whatever this “thing” is, it’s slowly destroying the bone.

The doctor goes in on August 2 to take the tissue out and do a little bit of looking around while he’s there.

On the positive side, The Girl gets to hang out with The Gigi (and possibly Pop) for a couple of days while they are here to help out immediately afterward.

Speaking of The Girl … The Girlfriend’s divorce finalized a few weeks ago. While nothing has been said yet, we’re expecting further announcements to be forthcoming from that end.

I’m always afraid to open the windows for my cats, for fear they’ll get a claw stuck in the storm screen, leading to a damaged screen and a hurt cat. I also worry they might smell something irresistible and crash through the screen to go outside. Does anyone have any experience with letting cats sit in an open window with a screen?

Not sure why this just came to me (Mythbusters, probably, and apologies if another Orbster has stated this).

Because they can go from solid to liquid, and back; can we refer to cats as:

    “A Non-MEWtonian Fluid”???

We call it the amorphous state but it’s the same thing. Cats are like Silly Putty. We had a cat years ago who caught flies. He sat in a bay window and trapped them against the glass. He’d pop them in his mouth and let them buzz around for a bit before swallowing them.

What a day for a daydream

What a spot for a daydreamin’ boy

And now he’s lost in his daydream

Eatin’ dried spiders brings Puck such joy

And even if that’s something Elvis can’t abide

It’s one of those days to take in the view outside

Blowin’ breezes and unlimited warm sun

That shines on Puck’s face until the daylight is gone

He’s been livin’ a sweet dream

He’s been dreamin’ since he woke up today

No jarrin’ him from his sweet dream

’Cause cozy sills make him feel this way

And even if nighttime is closin’ in or not

He couldn’t care less about movin’ from this spot

Tonight he’ll watch lightning bugs blink in the sky

While a chaotic Jules might just come bonkin’ on by

And you can be sure that if Puck’s feelin’ right

His daydream will last along into the night

Tomorrow at breakfast he may perk up his ears

Or he may be dreamin’ for a thousand years

What a day for a daydream

Custom made for a daydreamin’ boy

And now I’m lost in a daydream

‘Cause Pucky’s one bundle of joy

    - John Sebastian – Daydream – The Lovin’ Spoonful

Foxy loves to get between her bookcase and the window. Unfortunately, owing to her size, I can’t position the bookcase on top of the dresser in such a way that she can have both bookcase/window space and a “ledge” at the front to walk on. She used the bookcase/window space for hiding; nowadays she goes behind some boxes in the closet. I am still sorting this room out.

I’m a bit bummed tonight. Due to my job taking me away from my house 2 weeks at a time (not a new development, been this way my whole career) I can’t own any pets. I just got home after visiting my mom for a good week and a half and her two cats who love attention. I’m currently going through cat withdrawal. I’m so used to having a cat wanting attention now that it feels strange being without a cat to pet.

My cat Johnny Depp had a window sill bed. We always had very good communication. One day, he climbed up onto the bookcase under the window, tapped on the closed Venetian blinds with his paw and settled into his bed. I knew, like a voice in my head, that he wanted the blinds opened, even if I didn’t know why. I opened the blinds and, sure enough, sunlight fell across Johnny Depp’s stripes. He was one-in-a-million, that cat.
