So Bets touches Gunther’s “ears!?” GAME ON!!!

See Gunther needs a good relationship outside the normal cast of characters before we ship him up to anyone else..heck look at Brad..he never really grew up til Toni came along. Even if it doesn’t last Bets is going to be good for him.

I would have been very disappointed if Bets had given up so easily. It wasn’t fair of her to blame Gunther for Les’s lies, just because they live together (although I don’t blame her for being cautious! It’s a man’s world, a girl’s gotta be safe!). She seems sweet and geeky, hopefully this works out!

Wow, nice recovery, Gunthy Spock – Kirk! This looked like it was about to crash and burn for a minute. Live long and love her, Gunthy. She doesn’t want to be a friend.

So Bets softens all this #@$* with some gentle humor. Smart, gorgeous & kind…

A little take charge attitude, a little clearing of the air, a little humor, and its “hoist the sails”, the squall has disappeared.

No, you’re a weirdo. But, especially nowadays, that’s no deal breaker.

Looking at the first panel, LuAnn’s introduction to Bets was embarrassing, but innocent. So she graciously steps out of the scene, wishing Gunther “Good luck”. Les though, being Les, can’t resist leering at Bets as he leaves (although to be honest, I can’t really blame him). His parting line that he will “see her later” suggests he figures Gunther will blow it. Opening a chance for him to swoop in and grab her for himself. Second panel, Gunther does the right thing putting everything out in the open. It’s especially good that he did this before Les could tell it his way, and ruin everything. Third panel? Gunther’s reward for a good decision.

Glad Gunther was able to get left alone and explain the situation. He deserves to have a good date.

Gunther you and Bets are so cute. Don’t blow it.

Like a good electronics technician (like me), when it comes to diagnosing a situation, you never take another technician’s diagnosis – particularly if you are not familiar with their capabilities. In this case, she chose to look at and assess the situation herself and proceed with what she thought was best. I think this might just turn out alright…

STOP! Wait a second! “Angry, Sullen, Moody GUNTHER“ Just (GASP) raised his voice and chased off all the trouble makers! And Bets is not giving up on Gunther!! In fact, if I didn’t KNOW better, it appears Bets May have the HOTS for Him!!! I’m Shocked! SHOCKED I Tell You!!!

Yeah. THIS has GOT to be a Dream. Or some SICK April Fool’s Prank by G&K! Gunther’s Luck is NEVER this “Good.” Or could it be that someone in the Team Evans camp is finally taking some “mercy” on him?? Nope. I don’t believe THAT, either. This has gotta be a dream/prank.

But that “look” on Les’ hideous face, says he’s going to continue to be a “Problem” dream or no dream, it comes to Bets or ANY other gal that enters Gunther’s Life. He’s gonna to HAVE to be DEALT with something more than a “raised voice.” But that’s for later. Enjoy this small victory, Gunny. And if you’re NOT “dreaming,” be sure to take Bets to a small cafe for a glass of wine, after the convention. I think she might LIKE that……, ;)

Now that the two intrusive pests have left perhaps the evening can be salvaged.

Yes!!! “Florence nightingale” strikes again!!! The past is now all passe. Now it’s time to flip the page, and start a new chapter. Good for Gunth for speaking up! Hope we get to see the rest of the date. But I suspect it will be on to something else and weeks later it will pick up with their relationship out of the blue, with no idea what happened on the date. There is another day, though…..

For most women, “I live with a jerk because my mommy makes me” would be turnoff. Gunther may have just found his soulmate.

Gotta say, I’m pleasantly surprised. This just might work out.

I finally get to say that I told the forum/blog so! There was so much shade being thrown at all the Luannverse people—other than OX assumedly—for being themselves, from Gunther with his usual attackers, to Luann being a lunkhead and really the “I don’t like her” types, to the cockroach Les, and advising Bets to either run for the hills, or somehow being besmirched because she dated Les once, that trying to say let Gunther and Bets talk to each other honestly was submerged in that JUDGMENTAL TROLLISM. Well they did and I TOLD Y’ALL SO!! This is really a very promising development. A hot, Chocolate fellow nerd! No heart breaking here please.

Will Gunther enter Pon-Farr on the first date? I think he’s due.

Well, well! HIS ears sure perked up! :)

Item one: Crow is being served. Beyond any logical consequence from the real world, things worked out, after all. It is good, as many have said, that Bets was able to overlook the freak show that was most of this week. (I still maintain that, in the real world, Bets would have been gone Tuesday)

Item two: The fat lady ain’t sung yet – and I’m not referring to Tiffany, either (nor do I consider her any degree of fat): This is only Friday. There is at least one day left in this arc, by G&K standards. Whilst I most sincerely hope not, there is still a chance that Tyge was right and this will turn out to be just a dream sequence…

I guess you could call it, I no longer trust G&K. Or, more appropriately, I do trust G&K to somehow yet turn this into a torture for Gunther.

It is a relief that the well meaning, but inappropriate statements by Luann, the usual snide comments by Les, and the gently poking fun comment from Ox do not appear to have derailed the actual interaction between Gunther and Bets.

I am glad that Gunther’s frustration also apparently was useful and successful today as well (we know that many times in the past it had not been so). So that too, is good.

So, for me, Monday and Friday were quite good days… but I personally still felt little-to-no “Hilarity Ensues” from Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s efforts…. so overall the story for me this week has been a rather rocky rollercoaster of emotions. I hope that Saturday ends on a positive note and not some sort of nebulous or even foreboding “cliff-hanger” sort of set of panels.

It will also be interesting…. if Bets is allowed to remain as a character here… what is some of her backstory? Will she too be a Moony student? Will she perhaps be the same age as Gunther or will she perhaps be a few years older and is perhaps in a career? I will be looking forward to hearing more of her story.

anyone else wondering what Bets’ “normal” dress style will be? Typical college girl, or something quirky and notable?

It’s looking like G&K are developing Gunther and Bets into a regular topic. Question is; What kind? Gunther has enough female “friends and acquaintances” for several strips. One would surmise the intro of a new character would be to explore a romantic relationship. This could be interesting in that Gunther “has history” with romantic relationships, and it didn’t end all that well. Bets also has history – we have a hint that Les’ date with her didn’t go all that well.

And, of course, Gunther’s explanation of his arrangement could only help matters!

Now how are all the nay sayers who were saying either Gunther or Bets or BOTH should just flee the scene and completely abort their date, feeling today? I’m so glad that didn’t happen!

At the risk of sounding like a Luann Hater…. To say “Good luck,” to someone in front of their new date is just a bit tacky.

A coupe days ago I opined that Luann had a role to play in this Gunther/Bets intro episode. I also said she acted somewhat off-character. Today’s strip only reinforces that IMHO. In the previous “date at The Gulag” episode Luann was all girl-friendy. Near kissy strip, tee-heeing in the bedroom, “getting caught” and escaping thru the window, contemplating coming back into the bedroom thru the window… the whole thing!

Now that this sequence has played out, she appears all sister-like. Her behavior here was more like one of her bro-sis interactions with Brad. Either Greg uses Luann in a deliberately inconsistent manner, OR, he’s keeping a Gunther-Luann relationship in his back pocket, just in case.

Several commenters here feel that Gunther should wind up with one of the other major female characters in Luanniverse. At the present time, that would be Tiffany, Luann and Bernice; in that order of likelihood.

It would be radical if Gunther ended up being 1-for-1 at internet dating

It’s too bad that she doesn’t ask the most logical question here: “If you hate this guy so much why don’t you just move out?”

Um, I love the new character, but as an aside I must ask, what did you mean by “weirdo”? I suppose you meant gay? Come on, now.

I get all my hot cosplay chicks at Comic-Con.

That’s a good reason to have a meet-up on the other side of town.

The irony – or perhaps it’s a hint of promise – is that the date is still a going concern because Bets’ reaction was the opposite of Gunther’s. He jumped to conclusions and assumed the worst of Bets, not to mention giving off serious possessiveness vibes, despite the fact that he had initially been attracted to both the profile and the girl. She let her first impressions of Gunther rule the day in spite of that seriously creepy, possessive, comment that would have sent many women running. And with that. GnK have shown that Bets is might help guide Gunther in both the romance and emotional maturity departments.

Phew……I realize just how addicted I am to this strip given that all morning and into the afternoon I worried (not all the time) as to what today’s episode would bring. I couldn’t imagine that after locating a potential Trekkie soul mate Luann and Les would be permitted to take wrecking ball to the whole thing. It didn’t happen and I am relieved. Bets is made out of solid stuff; she didn’t allow her mission to be derailed. These two want to be friends and I think they will be.

Consider the source. When Les says Gunther is a dweeb, Bets should infer there’s a good chance Gunther is O.K.

Bet’s face in the first panel suggests that Les scares her. I believe she’s relieved to find a nerdy guy who will treat her like a lady. Luann’s dweeb comment fell on receptive ears.

“Dweeb” is as “dweeb” does!

The last time a lady got interested in Gunther was when he acted “manly” and the lady was Tiffany. She likes a take charge man.

So who’s gonna make a surprise entrance tomorrow and ruin everything? Bernice? Tiffany? Irma?

Now, this makes me happy. Yay!

Wait until he explains to her that he lives with Les because they share a house in the back yard of the house where his mom and stepfather live. She’s bound to wonder why he can’t seem to bear living too far away from Mom.

Bets is a saint!

Maybe the Gunther-Bets date has a chance to flourish even after the descent of the plague of locusts (a.k.a. “friends”)….
