So Bernice annoyed Luann right from the first time they met??

I hope this improves and we see a good story of why they became best friends.

It may just be me.. but don’t they look and speak like kids who are older than 6? I’d say at least 8 or 9.

So that’s how Luann and Bernice rocky friendship started, And all all those years ago Bernice is still condescending and annoying.

Well Luann wasn’t that friendly here. She was upset she got busted peeing in public. And denied it. Now I know why Bernice finds it easy to be snarky toward her. I would say the same as what Bernice did here. She made an observation which Luann lied about. Denied about. I’d roll up my eyes and walk away. I suspect Bernice hung around and pushed more buttons. Luann is fun to push buttons on.

I’m wondering if we’re supposed to think Bernice is neurodivergent. She seems not to understand social conventions — such as, when you come upon a stranger doing something embarrassing that’s none of your business, you don’t mention it. A younger child, maybe age 3 or so, might make a remark, but less likely a school-age one. I hope we’ll see Bernice doing something nice for Luann, because this is a very inauspicious meeting for friends.

Luann: ‘Who are you?’

Bernice: ’I’m th girl with 50 hamsters. Later it’ll be 50 cats..’

So I guess I was right when I said: “Oh, crap.”

How did they become friends? I would think Luann wouldn’t want to have anything to do with Bernice ever after that. Why would Bernice nag Luann into admitting what she was doing when she already knew? She didn’t need to scold Luann either.

So—Bernice was a PITA from Day 1!!

And Luann may have been pooping, not peeing!!

I think I’d have a hard time becoming friends at all (let alone BFF’s) if this was how we’d met.

If I remember a little while back when Bernice was staying at Luann’s parents she felt awkward getting out of bed to “wee” in the middle of the night.

So basically, Bernice has always been pushy and hypercritical.

I like how the story is progressing. Bernice was already a curious person who asked a lot of questions without caring if they might be annoying and Luann doesn’t like the awkward interrogation. After that, Luann probably tried to avoid Bernice, but she kept following her and eventually they found something that brought them together. I know it’s unlikely, but I woul be happy if this story also became an opportunity to show Bernice’s parents faces, not just their back or a silhouette.

If you do something in public, you make yourself subject to public comment. Hopefully this taught Luann a lesson and she always sought out a restroom in the future, since urinating in public is against the law. It’s too bad she gave Bernice the idea about hiding in the bushes LOL!

OH, I thought she was pooping. Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for little boys to run behind some bushes to wee, but it was a lot easier for us. My grandpa told a story about the boys having a contest behind the barn, and a girl showing up and, using a pinch technique, hitting higher than any of them.

Even as a little girl, Bernice was nosy. Then again, it seems that Luann wasn’t too friendly either.

This explains a lot of their relationship ; )

Hilarious! The strip’s underlying theme of the characters, now becoming young adults, is clearly shown here today. One other underlying plot and character development is also shown here: how Bern’s acerbic wit, and aggravating habit of trying to get her emotional Rorsach of a friend to see the truth, about herself from a very personal way. I disagree with the many opinions here that Bern is a terrible friend for Luann. She is the uber perfect friend.

Even for a little kid, Bernice seems irrational and irritable about weeing (like she still is, remember when she first moved in and was afraid she’d wake everyone up with her weeing?)

here’s an idea for how they could bond: Luann will finally say “well i have an older brother and he does it wherever he wants… so why can’t i…?…” then Bern will say…“i have an older brother too.. yeah it’s so easy for them why not for us?” Then Bern tries it herself while Luann keeps guard.

I suppose this answers the question of if Bernice always sucked. Even as a little kid she was an irritating little busybody who refused to read the room and stuck her nose where it wasn’t wanted.

Come on Cal, you know that is a plot device.

It appears that Bernice has been insufferable from the start. I’m interested to see how these two became best friends.

Luann should have learned from this first meeting that Bernice is a jerk. She had ample warning what kind of person Bernice is and still became friends with her.

Sort of surprised Luann would submit a paper to school ("The First Time I…) that she admitted getting caught peeing in public.

Cognitive inflexibility – Bernice wants concrete, black-and-white answers?

If you have to ask, then you didn’t see enough to independently determine.

But let’s be honest here, that IS why the Good Lord gave us bushes.

And how did they end up as friends after this introduction to each other?

She literally got caught with her pants down…I think her attitude was more out of embarrassment than anything else.

I find it so bizarre that so many (mostly of the anti-Bernice crowd) think there is no way in hell that Bernice and Luann should be friends after “the above”.

These are two six year olds and both the actions and responses of Luann and the actions and responses of Bernice seem very typical, very real and reflect pretty well they way a lot of kids interact and react at this age. Have none of you ever seen a bunch of kids on a playground?

I met my longest friend back when I was 8 (many, many decades ago) and our first meeting was not “caring & sharing” but instead was a game of dodge ball that erupted on the playground. I happened to get especially trounced by the other team…. in which my longest friend was a key player. Even though it was a few days later, when we met up on the playground again, we kept hanging out and within a little while we ended up becoming very close best friends. He was my best man at my wedding, and I was the best man at his wedding. We still get together regularly.

Far too many folks are anti-Bernice or anti-Luann in this comment board. When will folks actually realize BOTH Luann and Bernice are pretty darn realistic versions of how many young adults (and young kids at the moment) are. Both Luann and Bernice have a LOT of very, very good qualities….. and BOTH have some areas they both could grow at. Neither is bad, and neither is a saint.
