When I was younger I’d have done cold showers (at least some seasons of the year) in return for books.n

Unfortunately, going through the anticipation over and over again is not what reduces the fear.

We have a demand water heater right outside the bathroom, and it still takes what seems like forever. It would seem even longer if I were actually in it.

My water heater functions flawlessly and I never have shown it any gratitude. It’s a “Tankless” job.

I turn on the sink faucet until the water’s hot. Turn it off and turn on the shower faucet.

Just because it’s running cold at first doesn’t mean you have to stand in it. I usually use that brief period to draw the shower curtain and ready the soap and washcloth.

Frazz doesn’t need a bake sale to buy a new water heater, Frazz is loaded and could buy it himself if he wanted it.

As a veteran of a number of multi-day peace marches, I have perhaps an inordinate love of hot water, and have absolutely no desire to enter the shower until it heats up. Sometimes on a cold day I’ll even run enough water a half hour in advance to force the water heater to kick in. However, I agree whole-heartedly with the final line about library books: I was in New York City last fall, and fell in love with the library’s “Protect the Freedom to Read” campaign.

In my house, the water heater is in the SE corner of the basement. The kitchen sink is in the NW corner upstairs. We are on a well. What spam-for-brains thought that was a good design? I’m converting the hot water supply to a thermostatically-controlled loop, back to the water heater. That should reduce the amount of wasted water from gallons to ounces. And make the shower hot by the time I step in.

Back at about age 15 I was extremely shy and had no wish to stand out for any reason. I was very scared to do something that was “wrong”. Then I figured out that I was extremely anxious to skip school as my classmates did. I decided that I wanted to get rid of this fear and skipped school together with the others for a few months. Well, certain classes, not the whole time. We went to the bakery or supermarket. Things like that. When I wasn’t afraid anymore I skipped skipping for good. Now I often think back and wonder how brave I was. I don’t think our teachers took us serious ’cause no one ever said something and otherways we all were doing well in school :-D

The youngster did a good thing. She took on the sale as a benefit to Frazz. In my experience children are most likely to take on a project that helps someone else. They often are more caring and thoughtful of others who have less. Then they reach their teen years, and for many, the central focus of their lives becomes themselves. Takes a lot of years to get past that.

I always turn on the hot then the cold water for the shower, then adjust to a good temperature as I go along. Seems reasonable.

Why not just do self-flagellation? It’s quicker, easier, and doesn’t run up your energy or water bill. It’s warmer too.

My central hot water installation has a circulation pump. As soon as somewhere hot water is turned on it runs until hot water returns and all the circulation line is heated up. So I use the cold water from the „hot“ faucet to brush my teeth – and then go under the the hot shower.

One winter I was in tears because the water heater was broken and the roommate/owner said “Just let it run longer”. (>_<) It was Freezing!

I like to finish showers with cold water. Works just fine in three of the four seasons here in central NC, but in the deep summer the cold water isn’t that cold at all.

This has actually been shown to activate brown adipose tissue, which has a higher density of mitochondria and burns more energy.
