The shadow rose up and took form. It was the pumpkin-toned cat that I had seen earlier. I had no idea how it had gotten in, but there it was. It was very large for some reason. Or I was very small. It was all a bit frightening, but for the assurance that I was somehow special. So I stuck to that, asking, “Why should I have some special destiny?” The cat actually grinned, which was a bit chilling, and replied, “You are destined to be my dinner. There is nothing special about you, other than you are slow and stupid. I’m toying with you. But don’t worry about it. When I’m done, you, as a whole, will still be you, but a tiny bit less slow and stupid.” Then it struck me with one paw, with the claws out, piercing me, coloring the paw red. And that was all I remembered later, when I really woke up and realized it was just a dream. But it seemed so real.

Laika was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. A stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, she flew aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, launched into low orbit on 3 November 1957. As the technology to de-orbit had not yet been developed, Laika’s survival was never expected. She died of overheating hours into the flight, on the craft’s fourth orbit.
