Currently, the _ (underscore) character can be used to identify italicized text in a comment.

As I found out with my prior comment, the comment preprocessor may remove some _‘s inside a URL (Wikipedia/Wikimedia likes to use them in filenames); so, if you want to post a URL containing an _, change every _ to _ before posting, to avoid the preprocessor. There might be others; that’s all I’ve come across so far.

It means no links, no pictures, no strikethrough text or different sizes (these were all possible). Apparently spammers were using paragraphs in some sinister way, because those are no longer possible without something to separate paras.

If you use angle brackets where I have square ones, here’s how you get

And a line return you get by returning twice.
