This made me laugh when it ran originally, and still makes me laugh today. Things never change.

Wow, the same thing happened with all the “shoplifting ring” stories, except the media never corrected the story, they just removed most of the articles entirely from their websites.

Those kids coming across the border aren’t stolen, they are being accompanied by “family members”

I’ll bet the original story helped the Picayune’s bottom line for a few days. Never mind “If it bleeds, it leads”: Panic journalism buys eyes!

Perfect timing, the conspiracy theories of the 1980s and 1990s have reared their ugly heads anew. And still untrue.

As I recall It was the milk cartons and not the paper that really pushed the kidnapping craze of the early 1970s. I remember I use to try to hold on to my mattress when sleeping so if someone came in and tried to grab me I would be too difficult to move. Nowadays kids have to worry about getting shot by a classmate, and that’s not a lie.

    Right below the tidal schedules?

That way I’m sure to see it.

Any newspaper that has tidal schedules in it will have them scrutinized by most of their readership – tides are very important for working and recreating around tidal waters.

I don’t know about America, but downunder we had “The Stolen Generation” and it was real. Government officials rounded up the young children of indigenous parents and forcibly took them away to be taught how to be “good whitefellas”. It was only recently (on 13th February 2008) when our Prime Minister stood up in Parliament and made his famous “Sorry” speech, with many of the now-elderly stolen children present to receive it.
