Stars are against you…

No, ADVERTISING is against US!

Gee those spammers are everywhere.

There was this store that ran commercials, and their jingle was:

“You’ll be looking good For a whole lot less At Anthony’s…!”

And EVERY AUGUST, it was the same thing:

“You’ll be looking good GOING BACK TO SCHOOL At Anthony’s…!”

I hated that commercial.

Like holding a mirror in front of Dracula!

Arrgh! Commercialization is EVERYWHERE! Run, Lio, run! Find a deep, dark, secret cave, and in it be very, very still and silent, and maybe the wily Advertisers won’t find you!

The stars are aligned, Lio, can’t escape HIS fate.

Now THAT’s some good advertising connections….

Man, glad to see I’m not the only one that’s sick of seeing this everywhere you turn.

We feel your pain, Lio…believe me. You can’t come NEAR gocomics any more without being bombarded with…

….Etc.

Amazing. Lio hangs out with zombies, the Grim Reaper and giant insects without fear but all it takes to get him running scared are a few silly words.

The stars are right, and true, unknowable horror must descend upon us…

I love that Staples commercial.

“Schoolbells ring and children sing / It’s back to Robert Hall’s again. / Mother knows, for better clothes, / It’s back to Robert Hall’s again. / You’ll save more on clothes for school; / Shop at Robert Hall’s!”

I miss that sign of the changing seasons from my childhood.

@Grog: I like that Staples commercial too, look forward to it every year, especially the look on the kids’ faces.

I used to have nightmares like that. Fortunately, after being out of school for almost 30 years, I rarely have a first-day-of-school nightmare any more…

Oh dear! It’s everywhere!

Aug 24….YaY!

I looked forward (in a way) to seeing my loving schoolmates and understanding teachers. For three months I had thought of dirty tricks and had no one to pull them on. Payback Time! More hair was pulled from my teachers head the first week than the rest of the year combined.

He came close to getting his name up in lights, anyway….

WOW, pschearer, I haven’t heard that Robert Hall’s jingle in ages - since the mid-50s in Chicago, anyway. Thanks for the memory!

Sadly, commercials have been a part of our lives for a long time. I remember TV ads for Marlo Furniture in the ’70s, where the pitchman sang to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy: “Yankee Doodle went to Marlo, where he knows the prices are low…”

Do y’all remember Ralph and the Alka-Seltzer? “I can’t believe I ate the whoooooole thing. And his wife says,”You ate it , Ralph”.

Plop, Plop Fizz, Fizz oh what a relief it is.

The oldest ad jingle I can remember is from 1973, which I know because it’s right in the jingle.

“Volare, come see! Plymouth Volare, for 73!”

(I guess it worked, since many years later I bought a (very used) 1978 Dodge Aspen, which was the Dodge equivalent of the Volare.)

I have the urge to go buy pencils and composition books.
