I grew up at a time when Americans cared about each other more than their political beliefs. There was no detachment from our neighbors because they were Democrats or Republicans, fans of different teams, had different ethnic backgrounds, or went to worship in different places … we were all citizens of the United States and proud of it. This was a time before the 10 commandments had morphed into the 10 suggestions making it OK to lie, cheat and deceive to gain control or prove a point.
The Russians were only temporary allies during WWII and afterwards we could not accept their inhumanity and suffering they imposed on others even though they were seen as one of the superpowers. Clearly they were not interested in letting everyone have a voice in their regime. And they have a history of poisoning people that could cause problems using unique means that are traced back to them. The Communist dictatorship fell, but it’s malicious spirit seems to linger.
The world looks at the US very differently today and sees a once powerful united nation now very divided and their leader spurning allies and making deals with their former enemies … with politicians not caring about it.
