The dripping blood our only drink,

The bloody flesh our only food:

In spite of which we like to think

That we are sound, substantial flesh and blood—

Again, in spite of that, we call this Friday good.

    T.S. Eliot

Just a note: the Muslims are still in Ramadan until the next new moon.

I am trying to imagine what the first Easter must have been like for the Apostles.

It is the first day back to work after a major holiday. Several days ago, a bloodthirsty mob had my leader executed. I am afraid to go out of the house for fear of the mob.

So we send the women out to find out what is going on. Women are not a threat, so they can move freely within the city. At sunup, the women go to complete preparing the body for burial. After all, in those days, that was women’s work.

They come back way too early with a story about encountering the recently deceased Jesus up and walking about.

Do I believe them? Can I “connect the dots” in scripture and come to a eureka! moment? Does the light bulb go on in my head and I say, “So THAT’s what is going on!” or do I accuse the women of sniffing too much of the funerary ointments.

It seems to me that it is easier to believe looking back calmly from the outside and a duration of 2,000 years than it would be to believe in an addled, fearful and depressed state.

It’s tough enough to think about this from the Apostle’s point of view: but they got the information second hand from the women.

For the women, it was an “in your face” event. They must have been severely shocked. If they passed out or went running, shrieking through the city, the Bible does not record. Instead, they maintained an amazing amount of composure. I’m not sure I could have held it together a well as they did.

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. For those who don’t, Happy Sunday.

The pope held together very well through the ceremonies. I’m reminded of St. John Paul II’s courage struggling through his duties until the end. Both good examples of how to deal with the most challenging part of life.
