The monopy is in software not in hardware ( though virtually all are using an Arm64-based SOC) …

iOS (Apple):Developed by Apple for iPhones and iPads. Android (Google):Developed by Google and used by various smartphone manufacturers. Windows 10 Mobile (Microsoft):Developed by Microsoft (though no longer actively developed or supported). BlackBerry OS (BlackBerry):Developed by BlackBerry for its smartphones. — Quora Jan 22, 2024

There are a lot of monopolies and companies with predatory prices that you could go after. Hey, the gov. was even thinking of going after the NCAA but that would be politically disatrous.

What a load of bovine scatology. Apple in 4Q23 had 25% of the smartphone sales in the US. Android based smartphone across brands had a 75% share. The real reason for the bogus lawsuit is Apple’s security, the FBI, and the Justice (har-de-har-har) Department has had it out for Apple for many years Apple refuses to give them a backdoor so they can break into your phones without out a court order. Apple has alway cooperated with a court order but by Apples rules. Yes there is China but that is China not the USA. World wide Apple’s smartphone market share is about 4%. As Ramirez points out there are a lot of competing smartphones available that Apple hardly has a monopoly on the Smartphone.

The issue is Apple’s ‘Wall’. If you create an app that works on both systems, Apple’s Wall will keep your app from being available tp Apple users. .

No, the DOJ is going after the one that’s made by an American company. Are you about to die from the shock of this surprise?

Apple has always played dirty — creating terrific and unique products, but routinely grossly overpricing them and ruthlessly suing any and all competition. PCs did an end run past Apple and dang near put Steve and Co out of business in ‘97, but they bounced back — but with the same robber baron business practices. It’s good to see them pursued by the DOJ; karma’s a b…..

Leave it to Ramirez to try covering up the actual issue. Because… well, hmm. Because I guess he’s paid to do that. The monopoly is about Apple’s control of their own ecosystem. Once you buy in you have little choice about alternatives. As ALL the talking heads mentioned yesterday on OUR news channels, the issue is that you cannot use Apple software to communicate well with non-Apple software, regardless of where said software runs.

A company doesn’t have to be alone to be a monopoly. If it can control the marketplace through non-competitive means, it can still be a monopoly.

@ramireztoons – I agree. As an Apple consumer, I like my iPhone and MacBook. I’m willing to pay their higher price because they have higher value – they have function & style, they are stable & secure, they are quick & accessible (I HATED it when my Windows based laptop would decide that upon being opened up or turned on that THEN would be when it would FORCE an update or upgrade and REBOOT!!!)

While the DOJ may have some solid ground around the Apple Store on the high percentage or cost of providing access to applications, those applications have been reviewed for stability & security. I can trust the applications are not nefarious, nor do they present hacking opportunities.

AND there is a big, wide market of other "smart"phone manufacturers available to choose from.

    Well played sir.
