Your “cartoon” does not explain why the 151-year-old Popular Science magazine folded its print division. Or, People magazine may scrap its weekly print edition as its new owner looks to slash costs.
New electronic formats are killing print magazines. The new owners of Sports Illustrated are firing everyone so they can re-tool and come out with an all-digital edition. By firing everyone, they can rehire some and pay them less. It’s what businesses do; they treat workers and tradition with contempt.
Finally, we are on an electronic format to view Varvel’s work. How many print sources show his work?
Print magazines are on the way out. Newsweek gave up several years ago The list of other defunct magazines is long. The few that are left rely on elderly subscribers who like to hold what they are reading! Sports Illustrated was not going for elderly readers. To say “woke” did Sports Illustrated in is not only a lie but shows how unaware Varvel is about how things work!
“Valentina Sampaio became the swimsuit issue’s first openly transgender model in 2020. The first openly transgender covergirl for the magazine was Leyna Bloom in 2021.
In May 2022, Yumi Nu became the first plus-size model of Asian descent to be featured on the cover of the magazine. Also in May, Maye Musk became the oldest model to feature on the Swimsuit cover, appearing at 74 years old."
I read this differently. Considering the paper sources, trees?, the ink sources, energy to run the printing equipment, the “woke” crowd seems contrary to all these, and not only for this magazine. The pseudo gods in the Alps have spoken! Since I don’t read this magazine, I’m not sure of the significance of the pink haired dude.
Whatsa matter, Gary? Did Kim Petras make you feel bad after ogling her and then finding out she was trans? Is that why you drew her with a 2 day beard – to try to stop “responding” to the real image?
As much as you might like to blame the way they “tricked you”, it appears that most people are upset about them having used AI to write some articles. But you go ahead with “WOKE” – you do you.
“woke”, much like ‘politically correct’, is simply showing consideration for your fellow American. conservatives try to demonize those terms. Do conservatives oppose showing consideration, or just oppose Americans? That is not what is happening at SI.
Varvel’s transphobia aside, if the popularity of Sports Illustrated magazine is based on the whims of transphobes, then the magazine and the company deserve to fold.
“Sports Illustrated’s publisher, the Arena Group, failed to pay its quarterly licensing fee to the magazine’s owner, Authentic Brands Group, and as a result, conducted massive layoffs of its staff. "
So, Gary, where’s the biblical moral justification for ogling only genetic females? I’m genuinely curious how the “traditional” SI swimsuit edition is ethically superior in your mind.
I don’t know what the trannie dispute is about here because I am sure, based on a very quick glancing observation, that it was the Martha Stewart cover that signaled that the end is nigh.

Create a 3rd category for trans athletes, and let all two or three of them that exist compete with each other.

Go Woke, go broke. Another dumb corporate decision. Men are not women. Trannies are drag queens with a hormone problem.

sports illustrated just announced it’s laying off most, if not all, of its union-represented staff.
right-wing politicians and pundits and pawns spend their every waking hour complaining about the lack of jobs available in this country.
So yeah, varvel, let’s ignore the jobs lost, and focus your complaint on who gets photographed in a bikini.
