She does sound rather like my Mom, who was what I call a “contrarian”. Even if you were trying to agree with her, she would get offended and claim you were agreeing for the wrong reason .
When J.J. abandoned Alex, she was simply following her mother’s example. Except that J.J. didn’t abandon Alex. She talked to Alex on the phone. She visited. She shared custody. IIRC J.J. spent seven years not even knowing if her mother was dead or alive. If I’m not remembering correctly, well, my bad. :-|
