Dogs can sunburn their noses. I do believe there is sunblock for them.

Red, you need to share your sunblock with Rover!

Hey, move the pool near a tree. Half shade, half not. Problem solved, enjoy boys.

I have a Blue Dobe. They’re notorious for having terrible skin and hair problems. He’s one of the worst as he’s almost completely bald. Always has been. If he’s going to spend any time in the sun, I have to spray him with sunblock or his back gets burned. Of course, he’s hopeless though because on a 95 degree day, blistering sun, he goes and lays on the sidewalk…

I thought this strip was supposed to be set in the 1960s. I was a kid in the 60s, and there was no sunblock. Lifeguards smeared their noses with zinc oxide, but suntan lotion or oil did nothing to prevent sunburn. The earliest sunscreens I know of had PABA and came out around the mid to late 70s. My father-in-law, a redhead, had some his dermatologist prescribed.

Everyone knows that dog noses are made of black rubber.

Not sure a black nose can get sunburned…

My family all have sensitive skin (we are pretty much of 100% northern European ancestry) and so, pretty much avoid the sun. Even with sunscreen (SPF 30 or above), we have to limit our time out in the sun. FYI – Anything above SPF 30 in only marginally better. SPF 30 -blocks 97% of UVB radiation, SFP 50 -98% and SPF 100 – 99% – according to both the EWG and the Skin Cancer Foundation – from a businessinder.com article.

I don’t know about dogs, but housecats can get skin cancer from being in the sun to much. Lost two of mine from that dreaded illness and it wasn’t pretty at the end. Now the rest aren’t even allowed in the enclosed porch – they have to stay in the house where we rarely open the blinds – living in sunny Florida after all.

Pink nosed doggies do get sunblock. The doggies with black noses are more protected.

First, I’d like to commend Red and Rover for being one of my daily delights. In reading 7/7’s comic however, it left me sad and stunned. My dog died from melanoma (skin cancer) from which I survived. Had I known there is a canine vaccine against melanoma, he certainly would have been in the front of the line knowing what I went through for several years. There isn’t yet a vaccine for humans against skin cancer. We must practice due diligence under the sun both humans and our fury friends alike!!
