The only good thing to come out of this is the number of politicians/talking heads who jumped to attack on social media and were roundly humiliated by doing so. The good part would be if they actually LEARN something from the experience. NHMB (not holding my breath.)
My husband and I have a saying we employ frequently when watching TV: If there were no stupid there would be no story (e.g., the fragile young woman dressed in a fluorescent white peignoir who, upon hearing agonized shrieks, goes creeping through the dark old castle down to the torture chamber in search of the shrieker — in bare feet) . Not supposed to apply to journalism. sigh.
Good news takes forever but bad news travels like lightening.
In cases like this the hoax does massive damage to everyone trying to more forward in race relations. It shatters the still fragile trust being built in the communities. It casts doubt on real cases of racist terror. It makes police hesitant to take a real victim’s word.
Smollett has done a huge disservice to black, gay and the white community.
Reaching all the way back to Ms. Brawley. That the best you can do?
As long as you’re reaching, how about you go for the Scottsboro Boys? There’s a pretty interesting case, yes indeed.
Why did you compare Smolett to Brawley, instead of Victoria Price and Ruby Bates? I mean after all the Scottsboro case was clearly fabricated, there was never any doubt.
Your piece is clear race baiting. Disgusting. History is full of white women lying about black men and getting them killed.
Was Smolett wrong? Yes indeed. Was the media wrong? Yes indeed. Blast them. They need it.
But to dig up Brawley? And compare the two? And smugly overlook the atrocities that black men have endured at the hands of white mobs?
Your piece trivializes the entire issue.
And then your comment on Chicago. Good grief man, your tone almost sounds disappointed that Chicago is not burning because you don’t get the chance to say, “Yup, I told you so, you know how those people are.”
Eh. I see Lester’s point here. “Celebrity” (usually better spelled as “cele-bratty”) “news” isn’t something I follow unless the glass teet pushes it hard enough, long enough. I certainly hope he gets justice, modified slightly by kindness.
Oh, and I’d be perfectly happy never to hear another word from or about either Smollett or Brawley.
Yep. To serve an actor’s narcissism there could have been bloodshed. Thanks to American leftist culture… But fortunately some news eventually luckily uncharacteristically ain’t fake.
The reason Brawley has been raised is because Sharpton has the balls to have condemned Smollett. The irony, the pure hypocrisy, is too much to ignore. Lester is just one of many who have raised an eyebrow and commented on the absurdity of Sharpton opening his mouth in this case.
Part of the point here, part of the problem here, is the damage Smolett and Sharpton have done to the very fragile trust between the black and white communities. Trust that MUST be a two way street.
We all KNOW that blacks got the short shitty end of the stick, and in many ways continue to do so. Despite the very sharp reduction in racist acts and policies over the last 100 years, the black community still has more than ample reason for distrust.
It is bad enough that the white community has a long, long road to regaining trust from the black community. But there is also the matter of a handful of prominent or famous blacks using the racial divide for personal and/or political gain. With the news cycles inundated with the antics of Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan, BLM and the NBP, it becomes difficult for the white community to trust the black community. Difficult to trust a community that embraces blatant race agitators.
Back to the point, many of us are old enough to vividly remember Sharpton’s crimes in the Brawley case. How he used it for personal gain despite his awareness that it was a hoax. How he aided in destroying the lives and careers of innocent men. The very last person to be opening his mouth about the Smolett case is Sharpton. And for him to condemn Smolett makes the irony all the more disgusting.
In the broader picture, much of the white community views people like Sharpton and Jackson as being among the most visible impediments to improving race relations. So when a with a past like Sharpton opens his mouth in a case like this it would be ridiculous to expect the past to not be dredged up.
Most media reported what Smollett claimed. Actual suspicion was reported when within a day or so he refused to give up his phone, Even Roberts questioned that. Reportage changed within days, so this media bashing, in this case, reaches Humptian proportions based on BS.

Blame it on “whitey”. They get blamed for all of your failures. Ever think it just might be you.

Priceless; Good job, Mike. ’Course, one has to be old enough to remember, but still…good job.
To his credit, this time Al Sharpton is reportedly saying that Jussie should face ‘maximum accountability’ if he orchestrated this ‘attack’.

This hurts those suffering from real hate crimes. It allows deniers to justify that such actions actually occur or are harming “those people”.

Chicago would be on fire right now had this happened in spring, summer or fall.

And Mr. Lester is loving every minute of it.

Smollett should be punished to the equal extent that a real hate crime would be.
