Don’t know what they’re made of, but I tried to drill some holes in an old hard drive with a Tungsten Carbide tipped drill bit in a power drill, and it barely more than scratched it.

Why destroy it??? I have an old 10 MB hard drive from an 80286 computer, (with all my Wordstar material on it, DOS 3.6), that I use for a door-stop. Does a good job as a door stop too!

    Two words – copper thermite.

Many years ago, I had some left over Cadwelding thermite from a grounding project, several old hard drives, a rack handle, and a terracotta flower pot. Now I have one of the coolest doorstops I’ve ever seen.

An #8 torx removes the covers and disks. Take out the supermagnet near the arm pivot and wipe it over the disks. A regular magnet might not be strong enough.

His problem is obvious: the hard drive is bigger than the hammer. An eight pound sledge hammer would take care of it in one good sledge!
