The Republican way is to stage a mud slinging fight and then elect the most entertaining participant.
A Republic protects everybody from the majority. A pure Democracy is anarchy, rule by the mob. There have been a lot of times the majority was wrong.

Gerrymander things so that their candidates can win with fewer votes. Suppress the votes of people who aren’t going to vote for them.
