A friend volunteers at a no-kill pet shelter, and she tells me they have bird feeders outside the windows of the rooms for cats.
The wording “…leaves something to be desired” is more familiar to me. I’ve not seen it this way.

Sorry birdie but the feeder is really for the entertainment of the cats. The fact that it benefits you is purely coincidental.
