    If Nate got an 88 on any test, his teacher would think the world’s coming to an end!

    An 88 would be around 35.

    I just rounded up, 30 of 40 = 3/4ths, 75%, so 29 of 40 would be just under that amount. Not exact, exactly, but good enough for my purposes.

    I can’t figure out the faulty math logic that made Nate think he had an 88% on the science test.

    It was clearly a science test, not a math test!

    To figure out Nate’s actual score, we can use proportions (though it is much easier to just divide 29 by 40), which would be as follows:

    Let x be the percentage that Nate got.

    29/40 = x/100

    By cross-multiplication, we get 40x = 2900.

    x = 2900/40

    [Note that this is the same as dividing 29 by 40 and multiplying by 100.]

    x = 72.5

    To find out how many points Nate needed to get 88%, we can also use proportions.

    Let x be the number of questions Nate needed to answer correct out of 40 to attain a score of 88%.

    x/40 = 88/100

    By cross-multiplication, 100x = 40 * 88

    100x = 3520

    x = 3520/100x = 35.2

    Therefore, Nate needed to get at least 36 questions right (meaning that he was an entire 7 questions off in his calculations) to get a score of 88% or above (unless partial credit is given).

    if he got a 29/40 that means it would be like a 73/74
