Why does he procrastinate? What does he like to make life difficult for her? It is a lot easier to get homework in on time than to put if off. In on time is so satisfying, one less thing to worry about.

If it wasn’t because this whole comic would be ruined without Caulfield and his procratinations, I’d say: get hold of his parents (and Frazz?) and start diskussing what it would take to make him less bored and less of a pain i.t.a.

Big mistake to let Caulfield control the discussion. Better for the teacher if she would say, “No, let’s not talk about quality of life. Let’s talk about quality of report, due tomorrow, and if not in, failing grade for this assignment.” Then fail his a$$ if she needs to. If it happens again, don’t give an extra day, fail him then and there. One or two of those and he will get the idea.

If there’s one thing Caulfield likes less than procrastination, it’s a failing grade.

Reality Check — if any teacher (at least in my district) used the phase kill you towards a student — even in this context — they’d be out on their ear in record time. Mustn’t say anything that might cause harm to the little buggers, you know.

Take points off for late assignments. Problem solved.

If I were his teacher, I’d just pull out my grade book and put a red “F”, under “Home work”, in it and move on.

What WILLIAM BEDNAR said above is unfortunately what needs to be done, along with calling in the parents of the child for a discussion. Strip portrays him as gifted, so that would be something to discuss.

He should either be bumped up a grade, placed in an advanced class, or given independent study. When you do know as much or more than the book already, and the “one size fits all” curriculum won’t let you move ahead, the boredom makes you antsy.

Take a point away for every day late until he turns it in.

Daria, a show about a girl in HS who is very smart, but doesn’t relate well to most everyone around them. To her, their self esteem is in the dumpster because of how stupid most of them are in her eyes. Fixing that would ruin the show. Though she does graduate scoring well on most everything. No extracurricular activities to speak of because she has zero interest.

She’s right not to let him divert her attention; we see what a mess that makes when important people divert us from the main point.

“You can turn it in anytime you want, it’s still graded a zero.”Do it once and he’ll never be late again.
