When I lived in Northern Arizona, schools used to be closed for the first day of deer hunting season.

They have to be somewhat uncomfortable sitting in those chairs while wearing backpacks. Bad for the neck and back.

Sadly, this feeling doesn’t usually last past 2nd or 3rd grade.

I felt like this every year straight through my last year of graduate school. School was SO MUCH BETTER than vacation – a place to go away from mom and different books to read than the stacks of them at home. They used to have a summer reading program at the library. One was suppose to read something like the equivalent of book a week and one advanced along a path on the wall poster. I used to show up the second week with enough books read for the summer – which drove the librarians crazy – and then had to argue with them that the fact that all were nonfiction should not matter, as usually some were suppose to be same and some fiction, as nonfiction was better than fiction as it taught one things.

I still love the back to school department – even better than the Christmas department!

Apparently some states go back to school this week – end of July, start of August (not here). That explains why one year Walmart had the back to school out before school ended here in June.
