Town next to us still has parking meters that take a penny (OK, technically, since we’re in the US, a cent; “penny” is a UK coin), that gets you 30 minutes. Nickel is good for an hour, dime for 2. I let it expire once; the ticket was an envelope into which you place a quarter and drop it in a box.
Reminds me of an ad from the 1970s someone posted on Facebook. It was a full-page newspaper ad and the accompanying text read, “Everything on this page can now be done with a smartphone.”
finding a nickel and being able to buy enough candy for me and my brother to have five individual pieces of candy from the ‘corner’ candy shop – even with five bucks my grandboys find it hard to get that many individual candies today even if you should stumble across a candy store :(

Public phones no longer take coins (any that are left), and cashiers are slowly being phased out.

Although I’m 47 this year,I can understand what grandpa is going through.
