It always confused me how my dog could sniff here, sniff there, sniff and sniff until they found the right spot. What’s so special about that cluster of grass? What does it have that the others don’t? They all look the same to me. Is it that other dogs have gone there? Anyone know about this particular aspect of animal behavior?

It’s the doggie newspaper, who, where, what, when, and why.

We call it P-Mail. And a dog’s nose is his “GPS”.

I’ve never understood how dogs could pee so often, here on a tree, there, on a pole, well everywhere it’s needed….every few minutes…..But I’m in my sixties now, and I think I could pull that off…..

I remember seeing one of my neighbors trying to hurry his dog along on their morning walk, and the dog insisted on spending a ton of time sniffing one particular lamppost..What went through my mind was “either there’s a lot of news in the dog world to catch up on, or he’s a slow reader”.

The dogs read the latest edition of The Daily Barker. Any bush/shrub/tree is treated like the comments section in any newspaper.

Try walking four dogs, not only do they pee every 10 meters, they take turns on the same spot!

@ StCleve72, I hope you are less clueless now after all these comments!… Imagine visiting websites. New ones, old ones, all with ongoing commentary (like here!) — imagine this is your only contact with the “real world”. That, for dogs, is: bushes, trees, lamp posts. They smell 1000 times more than you or I do. It feeds a dog’s heart and soul. Any dog owner who thinks all they need is a workout is a naive person, and probably not a very good parent either….. Wiley, Tally Ho, way to go!

By the end of our 3 miles, my dog is barely able to muster a couple of drops, but he tries!

The dog keeps trying to whiz on all the Pokemon Go critters he can find, hoping to drown them all. I wish him all the best.

Shouldn’t the dog. . .? At least have it’s own ear phones?

When our dog sniffs, we call it P-Mail. When he actually pees it’s hitting the reply button, When he sniffs where he just went, it’s called smell-check.

Sticking his nose out the window as we drive at 60 mph is speed reading.

I had a dog who used to greet me when I came back from my run … until I took my shoes off and then he’d sniff them for 5 minutes to figure where I had been.

More like geocaching…especially when owners don’t pick up after.

BTW: my little dachsie doesn’t need the walk for physical exercise so much as he needs to feed his curiosity and mental health!
