Forget to mention the New York thing to the parental units?Yeah, last minute pleadings for bus/train/air fare work so well, don’t they?Evans ex machina will provide housing, cab fare and walking-around-money.
A summer of employment that may lead to a career, and that at the very least will result in your making the money you’ll need for next year’s tuition, vs. 10 days in NYC with a guy who will be so busy while you’re there that he’ll barely see you. Use a couple of brain cells, Luann.

“Apparently Luann is not in love with Quill” because she doesn’t immediately throw her prospects away for him without him even asking for the sacrifice? If he did ask that of her, then it would mean he wasn’t in love with her, and in fact would be somebody controlling and abusive that she should run away from as fast as she could scramble. Besides, what about the really basic principle that real love can wait for the right time and circumstance?
Here I am, age 65, with medical ills still undiagnosed after yet another bunch of tests (doctors still saying blood chemistry of pancreas is ‘off the charts’, but don’t know why).
At such times, a person can’t help but start thinking about options not taken. I spent my whole life on a ‘career’, and often had to relocate when bosses changed and I was seen as the tech support for previous ‘administrations’.
Others in my family had both career and significant others. And I wonder if my choice was wise, and would I do it again if I had the chance to change.
I don’t recall many gravestones extolling the virtues of the resident of that grave as a ‘good and loyal worker who stayed late whenever needed’…
Let me spell it out for the young and exploitable, here: unless you have become unhealthily obsessed with something that’s utterly destroying your life and the lives of those around you, anyone who tells you to choose between them and something that means a great deal to you is bad news. True lovers want you to be happy, prosperous, and capable of independence (what if he becomes incapacitated and needs a helpmate who has his back?) Besides, jettisoning who you are for somebody else ultimately makes you boring—who loves an empty shell?
This is crazier than Gunther!Wait until her Dad hears of her choices. What was that guy thinking, asking an 18 year old girl to NYC?Isn’t there a law for that?
New poll up – What’s your favorite current storyline?Should Cuddles (Luann’s cat, Sassy, later renamed to Cuddles) make a come-back?I expect that most voters thought I meant Puddles, the dog.1) 26 votes – Yes.2) 16 votes – What’s a “Cuddles”?3) 11 votes – No.4) 5 votes – “Other” (“you meant Puddles, right?”)
BTW, promiscuous sex and free drinking lifestyle are many times traps that end up damaging you fulfilling your goals, as those things might end up being more important than using your time toward your goals
Wow! Nancy just was metaphorically battered by a passing Luann-storm of immense proportions! Time for Damage Control. Nancy needs to call Frank as much as Luannatic needs to call Quill….
JPW – Now I can do it too— thanks for sharing the key to the musical notes.*And yes, as long as Mom & Dad are financially supporting their children, they have a right to not only knowledge but some control as to what those children do.*I declared my independence at 18, and thank God today that I did!
Happy Memorial Day, everyone.*I’m pasting a comment here from LeadingEdge of Calvin & Hobbes forum. I couldn’t have said it as well myself.*“…remember today those who made (the) ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Each Memorial Day, I try to imagine what our country would be like if we didn’t have the brave and dedicated men and women of the armed services, who faced injury and death, and for hundreds of thousands who died defending America against tyranny and oppression. This country would be unrecognizable – and not in a good way.We have a lot to be thankful for and owe these men and women our heartfelt gratitude."
Three Steps Over Japan asks:> New poll up – What’s your favorite current storyline?-Here are my least favorite from among the current storylines:(1) Gunther whines about how his life isn’t going according to plan(2) Brad and Toni can’t find a place to get married(3) Frank wants to renovate a warehouse, probably with financing from TJ(4) Middle-aged couples surely are boring and predictable! (Sundays only)
@argythree Oh dear! Your post must have crossed mine. May your doctors find out what’s wrong, and may it be something easily cured! If you grant permission, I will pray for you.
Or how about “Road Trip ed ing”? – Actually, though, it’s not even a “gimme” at this point…just a “wanderlust”… that makes me think of another one: “Sojurner Proof?”
“Seems to me Memorial Day is about the dead, so I would not expect to be giving good wishes”*NG _ D53- You both are right, thank you for correcting me. My thoughts had been more with hot dogs and baked beans than with the women and men who had died for our freedom.*Yet, as humorist Garrison Keillor once said, if those men & women could have returned home, wouldn’t they want to spend the day with their families at picnics and saluting the flag at parades?
Dang! What a conundrum; a chance to make money over a chance to spend some.Too bad you can’t do the latter without the former.I guess Unca Evans will have to open the Peru fund again.
I don’t know how everyone got the idea that being 18 means you’re an adult and can do whatever you want. Wouldn’t that be nice! Personally, I think that only means Frank and Nancy can’t have Luann arrested and brought back by the police if she goes to NYC.
I can’t wait to hear Quill say “Luann, please come with me. I asked you before, but now I’m begging you! I can’t bear to be without you for such a long time! Who else can I see unbelievably expensive Broadway plays with?”-Quill is the one who can truly do whatever he likes, not her.
Quill matters not. The papa will not allow Luann to go. Well, Maybe if the mother goes along too. -Quill may be offered a job on Broadway. They do need actors his age for many parts, not just as stars. -But could he refuse if given such a chance to enter the theater? Leaving him in NY could help our plot for it would get him out of Luann’s hair. —Jonah would envy him. Tiffany too.
Quill is one or two years older than Luann, so that also makes some difference. He’s certainly had more experience in independent living than she has. There’s no reason why he can’t go work in NYC in the drama program for 10 days and then come back to spend the rest of the summer with Luann in Pitt.
Actually, the law in every state is that you have to be 21 to purchase alcohol. The laws on the age for drinking alcohol vary from state to state, and in some cases the law may depend on the type of drink, where it’s consumed, and with whom. However, Luann lives in California, where the drinking age is 21, so she can’t drink yet. Quill probably has a year or 2 to go, too, which must feel unreasonable to someone who was able to drink legally back home in Australia. (Also, it was legal for Gunther to buy that beer in Peru that got him wasted.)
Luann, Senior, Quill seniors in HS, at MOST Q is 19, and you assuming the parents just gave him ticket and said “we won’t help you at all in the USA” and BTW, usually last year in Australia, students are 17/18, just like here ……….. and classes there are better, in some areas, the last 2 grades there are pretty much the equivalent of college here(as many USA HS kids never take calculus, trigonometry and upper level chemistry when graduating, and even some graduate with the highest class being intro-algebra and basic biology)
Quill arrived from Australia as a senior, when Luann was a junior. Quill went back to Australia and went through “another” senior year, just as Luann went through “another” junior year, before the characters were allowed to age. But then Quann became a senior, and Quill (instead of graduating in Australia), came back to Pitt for yet another senior year, along with Luann. So Q is at least 19, maybe 20. He would be expected to be more emotionally mature than Luann, except that he has no personality, so “maturity” is meaningless in this case.
Confederate Memorial Day started in 1866. Memorial Day (as observed today) started 2 years later, and it was started by General John Logan, the commander of the “Grand Army of the Republic” association of Union war veterans. The South therefore considered Memorial Day an imitation of the “original” Confederate Memorial Day, and it was meant for the war dead on “the other side”, so they kept their own day of remembrance separate from the North’s. Confederate Memorial Day remains a separate legal holiday in 9 Southern states, although the day on which it is observed varies among those states.
@Dave.53.“Memorial Day started as newly liberated slaves giving thinks to those who died setting them free in Civil War I USA.”.Good joke. They’ve never celebrated it, just angry it took so long.It was observed so many in the south remembered their dead that a visitor for northern climes thought it might be a good idea and pushed for it to be done throughout the nation.
Even if he is 19, I think it’s sad that Quill’s parents have never been mentioned, except to compare them unfavorably to Mrs. ? Gunthermom. And it’s very sad indeed that he had to stay in high school another two years.
Gunther told his Mom and Quill, in a flashback, that he bit into a hot pepper, swallowed half of Luis’s beer to cool his throat, and got very drunk on that small bit of alcohol. Remember, that’s the story that he told, back in the USA – we din’t see it actually happen. So did it happen that way? Or was Gunther really depressed (maybe more about Mr. Gray than about leaving Rosa!), and when he was in the cafe with Luis, did he keep ordering beers and knocking them back to drown his sorrow? I wonder…
Did he buy that beer, or did he simply drink it because it was conveniently there after Gunther had consumed something spicy? .. . . . . "-—————————He obviously had not purchased it. The driver had.
Yeah, I do believe that it was Luis’ beer, and Gunther hurried up and grabbed it, when the chilli took effect. Luis sure didn’t stop him from taking it, Lol, but I do believe that that’s what happened…
Hmm. Just to make sure, did you copy the symbols, themselves (recommended), or just the codes? – Try bookmarking the chart for either the page I had, or the one Wiselad had. Then you can refer to it, and also try it in a Word or Excel document. – Sometimes, too, Microsoft has an app in the store (for either phone or computer) that gives you a bunch of symbols to use….
Thanks for all the good wishes (and prayers, for those who offered). Not so sure what my next step is. Doctor wants me to go see the folks at the Mayo Clinic, but I’d have to hire someone to drive me (eyes are not good enough for highway driving anymore.) So, maybe this is my ‘new normal’.
Anyway, SPOILER ALERT!
I’m impressed by Nancy’s calmness. Maybe I’ll take a page from her book…
