It was never the pain/discomfort of drilling or cleaning that bothered me. I was much more afraid of the dentists (who always seemed to be big, imposing men back then) being angry that I hadn’t brushed well, or whatever, and then “telling” on me to my parents (who were not ones to forgive or forget)! Actually, I find going to the dentist no big deal now (other than cost and inconvenience) – I suspect that the technology, pain relief, and general technique has greatly improved in the last 50 + years.
