Didn’t Joni Mitchell forego Woodstock because her agents or advisors told her that it wouldn’t amount to anything, and to be a guest on Dick Cavett instead, or something like that? I hope she canned them for giving her some of the world’s worst advice.
Hard to believe Woodstock was 55 years ago. I was only 16 then and on the other side of the country anyway.
The other alternative is to die young. That way you will always be remembered as “young”, since no one would see you “old”. Think of President Kennedy, dying in his mid 40’s. Compare his image to how most think of Ronald Reagan, who was only 6 years older (most of the country only knew him when he was in his 70’s).
My dad always told me “Don’t ever grow old”. I’m 71 now and still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. Sometimes I feel like I’m still 14 (mentally, not physically!) and have been faking it for all these years.
My younger brother was in high school at a really bad time for his level of motivation. This was in the mid-1970’s and his Freshman math used the “self-paced” concept: REALLY bad for him! I don’t think he was able to complete it until he was a Senior, if then (I don’t know, I was long out of the house at that time). My parents’ expectations of him were certainly lower than they were of me (Mother: “If only he can get through high school…”)!
I enjoyed and did well in Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Calculus, but introductory Algebra in high school was a bear! Part of that I think is that for most students, the concepts raised in Algebra are entirely new and different from anything they had been exposed to before. My biggest problem however was that, being one of the “smarter” Freshmen (as opposed to those who took pre-Algebra that year), we were mixed in with Juniors and Seniors that were, shall I politely call “underachievers”, and had already flunked it 2 or 3 times. So the teacher really didn’t seem to care if we passed or not, and gave the impression that he assumed we would flunk anyway. I think he was really the only bad teacher I had in any of my school years.
We have two rescue Greyhounds (retired racers) and they are wonderful pets. I agree with your comment about the Iggies. They’re cute but in my opinion they look way too delicate and could easily get injured.
