   I read it, and I agree that we’re defining “happiness” differently, but I stand by my definition. You see my definition as “contentment,” while I see yours as “pleasure.” (Not to dismiss pleasure out of hand; that’s part of the wild strawberry story). And while brain chemistry is a factor I’d omitted, immediate circumstances still have little to do with happiness. Perhaps it isn’t as simple as “choosing” to be happy, but it can be cultivated; in some cases pharmaceutical assistance is needed, but in others it simply starts with the determination to be happier.

   Happiness is nine parts contentment and one part circumstances. Look around at the people whose circumstances seem better than your own: are they universally (or even generally) happier? Look around at the people who seem happier than you: are their circumstances universally (or even generally) better than yours?

   Philosophers east and west, ancient and modern, have stated “He is happiest who is content with least.”

   Personally, my goal is to be as happy as a three-legged dog. Why? Because they’re just as happy as four-legged dogs.

   Yes.

   Imagine you are walking along a cliffside and you see a hungry tiger following you. You know you can’t outrun the tiger, so you scramble down the cliffside. Below you, the surf is pounding the jagged rocks, Above you, the tiger settles down to wait you out. Beside you, you spot a wild strawberry growing from a crack in the rocks. Would you eat the strawberry?
