Peppermint Patty slumps at her classroom desk with a stressed look on her face. Marcie, sitting behind her, says, "You look like you're sinking, sir..." Peppermint Patty replies, "I am, Marcie."<BR><BR> She has sunk so low in her chair that her nose is touching the desktop. She says, "I'm drowning in a sea of unanswered questions..."<BR><BR> She kneels in her chair with her hands raised. She shouts, "Now, I suddenly surface! I splash frantically...'Help!' I cry...'Save me!'."<BR><BR> She slumps again in her seat and exclaims, "Now, I sink for the second time..questions pour over my head...'Who was Voltaire?' 'Who was Cato the Elder?'."<BR><BR> She springs up gasping. She continues, "Now, I come up for the last time....sputtering half-answers....spitting out verbs, infinitives, commas..."<BR><BR> She slumps again and continues, "I sink beneath the surface...I'm gone, Marcie...I'm gone..."<BR><BR> Marcie leans on her desk and looks down at Peppermint Patty. The latter concludes, "Mark, the spot where you last saw me...mark the spot where I drowned in a sea of 'D Minuses' and 'Incompletes'."<BR><BR> Marcie sits back in her seat and says, "Another scholar caught in the undertow, Ma'am."<BR><BR>
Peppermint Patty will do well later in drama class.
