This cartoonist seems to have issues with basic economics.

Not actually a challenge, but I think you chose a bad example to make your point. Most cell phones are free, only the high end phones have to be paid for when you sign up for a plan. But Eryx is right about the point that most insurance companies prefer to cover contraception because it is cheaper than pre-natal and post-natal claims. This is also why childbirth is essentially an out patient procedure to avoid the cost of an overnight stay.
