My wife’s Bichon sits up like that frequently, not so much to beg as to be up higher where she can be part of whatever is going on. We didn’t teach her to do it. I think it’’s a natural pose for the breed.
This is an everyday occurrance at my house but multiply it by two as my wiener dog Puddles now has an adopted and previously homeless sister we found by the name of Honey. They sing duets out back whenever they hear a siren.
I agree with georgelcsmith…our LuLu does it so naturally, for ages, and with no food in sight. She wants to be noticed and see what’s going on. We don’t encourage it tho’ but she is lean and never gets people food. It’s just her m.o. Our other one, Odie, lays on his back all the time…that’s his m.o. We call it ‘ballsup!’ He can’t sit on his hind legs to save himself.

Actually, dachshunds aren’t supposed to sit up like that. It’s hard on their backs. (My parents lost one that way.)
