Having been trained in Hazmat, I couldn’t believe any of the “reassurances” coming from the “administration” about the site. I couldn’t believe folks trained in hazmat were being so careless. Notable that those who wore respirators, or even quality masks (I understand how hot and sometimes hard to wear protective gear can be) survived with either far less, or no damage than those who didn’t even apply their training. “Civilians” around the site had no training, and didn’t know any better than what they were told- kind of the opposite of what those “WMD” pronouncements were.

^I would never applaud either incompetence, or those who will pinch pennies on taxes, and prevent rescuers from having that “proper equipment”- I spent to many years saving lives, even when we had to “make do” on equipment. Yes, I DO know what it means that people die because budgets are cut because of morons who don’t have a clue what is needed, and don’t care, as long as they get votes.

Good report on the responders, and their medical problems, and PTSD tonight on 60 Minutes.

While I’ve done a number of water rescues, including white water, never had a “dingy”, rubber or otherwise. It IS important to note however how many people have drowned TRYING to rescue folks without proper training, or “equipment”, which depends on the situation.

“As discussed in Wayne Barrett and Dan Collin’s excellent book “Grand Illusion,” about Rudy Giuliani and 9/11, helicopter pilots radioed warnings nine minutes before the final collapse that the South Tower might well go down and, repeatedly, as much as 25 minutes before the North Tower’s fall.“What Barrett and Collins brilliantly showed are the actual corrupt conspiracies on Giuliani’s watch: the favoritism to Motorola that saddled the firemen with radios that didn’t work; the ability of the Port Authority to skimp on fire protection; the mayor’s catastrophic failure in the years before 9/11/2001 to organize an effective unified emergency command that would have meant that cops and firemen could have communicated; that many firemen wouldn’t have unnecessarily entered the Towers; that people in the Towers wouldn’t have been told by 911 emergency operators to stay in place; and that firemen could have heard the helicopter warnings and the final Mayday messages that prompted most of the NYPD men to flee the Towers.” – Alexander Cockburn, salon.com

^There was also the brilliance of putting all “disaster coordination” inside the biggest target in the United States, as already proven.

Churchie- the “rescuers” were working in the area for weeks then months, without proper gear, because the EPA and “powers that be” told them there was no risk to them, or civilians in the area. Many knew otherwise, and took precautions on their own. The INITIAL response in the first few hours was NOT the same thing! It does no good to point out to you I have years of experience with this (SAR), you either won’t listen, or are too consumed with argument to realize, you don’t actually HAVE one!

Perry, Palin, Bachmann, and the other righties have ALL proclaimed we spend too much on government, and EVERY ONE of their proposals (and current offerings from Teapublicans in Congress) calls for cutting back on spending for emergency services, and “civilian” agencies that work daily to “serve and protect”. Instead they want MORE money for “defense” contractors, oil companies, and subsidies to their “buddies” in corporate America.

you’re right, nothing to do with Budgets , everything to do the Republican Filibuster of funds that was going to Firefighters and PoliceMen who were sick from cancer and other diseases linked to their participation in the Rescue efforts of 9/11/2001 http://articles.cnn.com/2010-12-09/politics/senate.9.11.responders_1_senate-gop-filibuster-republican-filibuster-first-responders?_s=PM:POLITICS
