Daughter: Dad, can I go to the mall? Father: No. Daughter: Well, I'll ask Mom. She'll let me. Father: Too late, honey. You should have asked her yesterday. That was a good cop/bad cop day. Today is a bad cop/bad cop day.
My parents always sent me around in circles. Mom would say “ask your father” so I’d go ask him, and he’d say “ask your mother”. I suppose it had its intended effect in that I became loathe to ask for anything.

Any of our kids that tried this got double-penalized. They soon stopped.
