The good thing was that the distress call led to closing the bridge, which kept the death toll down. But that repair crew on the bridge had (almost) no chance at all with the speed and manner of the bridge collapse. I am glad two survived, but hate to think about their nightmares from now on.
More than 42000 highway bridges across the USA are in “poor” condition, according to national bridge inspection standards (Scientific American june 23, 2023).
Is it today’s liberals that want to eradicate melting-pot America, build impenetrable walls around an exclusive, authoritarian, male-dominated, white, evangelical, theocratic USA, eliminate advanced education, eliminate social security, prohibit women/minorities voting, and replace its Constitution with an austere interpretation of the Old Testament?
The bridge collapse is tragic example of an attitude that pervades our society… to plan that what is created will fulfill a particular purpose, but ignore the possibility of any unplanned consequences.
In this case, the bridge was built to carry automotive traffic while ignoring the maritime traffic passing beneath it. It appears that the bridge supports were not designed to survive an impact by even a much smaller ship, nor did the design attempt to protect them from such an impact.
Protect? How about an artificial shoal (rocks are “cheap”) both upstream and downstream of each support, onto which any ship veering out of the channel would run aground before coming into contact with a bridge support? And such a “defense” could easily be “upgraded”. As ships are made bigger, such a “shoal” could be, too… and relatively cheaply.
I wonder if such a design will be considered when they rebuild this bridge.
What’s not evident in this cartoon is that the bad ship “AUTHORITARIANISM” hasn’t lost power; indeed, the skipper has jammed the throttles to the firewall.
A mechanical engineer did the math of how much force hit the bridge. (Momentum = Mass X velocity. It worked out to be 10 to 11 times more force than the plane that hit the tower on 911. Sorry… Pete Buttigieg or Joe Biden had nothing to do with it.

This cartoon has nothing to do with the accident. It is done in very poor taste. Let me guess Pedro, you did the same on 9/11 ??
