“What was I thinking?” could mean that it’s a lousy idea, or that he can’t decipher his nighttime scrawl.

Paul McCartney had the same thing happen to him. Anyone remember the classic Beatles hit Scrambled Eggs?

I sometimes go to bed with a problem from work in my head and wake up in the morning with the solution. I often wonder if I should be charging overtime. Might be a hard one to prove.

I’ve awakened from dreams of inventing some clever device and written it down. In the morning, it’s “What the heck is this? It makes no sense.”

The good part is, the thing you were worrying about at 2AM isn’t as bad in the daylight.

I write stories in my head. I just haven’t written them down yet. I’m waiting for a machine that can read minds to write them down for me! Lol!

I remember Dave Berg doing this for Mad Magazine long ago. In his version, the guy wakes up in the middle of the night and joyfully writes down the solution to the business problem that has been haunting him. In the morning his joy immediately evaporates when he sees that what he wrote down is total gibberish.

As for me, I sometimes resolve problems or come up with solutions while taking a shower. The mindless of that activity makes it a good time to just let the mind roam, which is sometimes the best way to find the answer you’re looking for.
