The HVAC in part of my house is dead, waiting for a part. If it gets much colder, there will be icebergs in my bowl.

    “Man, that water’s cold!”

    “Yeah, and it’s deep too.”

Happened to me once—the uninsulated copper tubing from the oil tank to my elderly 8 × 45 ft. mobile home had a kink in it which collected condensation and froze solid! I woke up, stuck my head out from under my electric blanket and puffed out breath clouds, and knew I was in trouble. Sure enough there was a cake of ice in the toilet bowl. I had the oil delivery truck come out, thinking I’d run out of oil, but the tank was full. They tried to back blow the clog but failed, then they discovered the kink which was the culprit. I finally had to crawl under the mobile home, disconnect the tube at both ends, take it down to the local hardware store, have an identical one made up, then reattach both ends (at least it was so cold the ground was frozen and I didn’t have to worry about spiders … I’m a girl, OK, I don’t like spiders!) Finally, I fired up my furnace and melted the indoor ice, much to my (and my cat’s) relief.

A few months after the above incident I moved down to Camarillo, CA, (better job opportunities than Oregon in the 70s, and to be nearer my folks). However, now I have to deal with the opposite extreme—we were hottest in the nation here again (93 F), 2nd time this week, and 3rd time in 3 months! this in spite of being just 10 miles from the Pacific. We could use some winter weather about now. (Winter … Winter??? What’s that? I’ve almost forgotten.)
