I grew at a more or less standard rate… though I did have a 3" spurt one year. My brother, though, went from about 5’3" to about 6’3" in about a year. The biggest spurt was in summer, though, which was a big advantage because: shorts.
He was the athlete in the family and for awhile he had a hard time walking, much less shooting baskets or hitting a baseball. That was also the year that he demanded (and got) a bed with no footboard…
I remember gym class could be a bit traumatizing as a teen. I was never the biggest or the hairiest of the bunch. The start of grade 10 was especially intimidating. Some guys came back with beards… felt like a boy in a men’s locker room. But as they say, what doesn’t kill you…
they say that growing 13-year-olds face all kinds of conflicts between muscles, bone growth, and weight, which makes for klutziness when it is least wanted. Trouble is, for me that continued right through the 70 years since, but my wife doesn’t mind. I got hugging right.
The late Barry White used to tell the story of how he came down for breakfast one morning when he was in junior high, said “Hi, Mom”, and scared the bejesus out of them both.
