I have never paid the upgrade to get a movie that might be interesting… and I’ve never managed to get as interested in one of the free movies as I am in reading my ebook. (because ebooks have variable font size: A must for my eyes).
One of the big problems in aviation is the paucity of women. It’s not just STEM. There’s a real misogynistic culture that hasn’t gone away in over 40 years. You missed an opportunity here by using “guy” and noting that “he’s sitting in the pilot’s seat.” Too bad. I always thought Frazz believed in equal opportunity.
The pilot only knows how fast the plane is going relative to the air they are in, tail or headwinds affect speed. Maybe the radar operator knows how fast they are going.
One of my worst flying experiences is in regard to inflight movies: I’d been watching “A Few Good Men” and just as they get to the big climax scene a stewardess stands right in my line of sight to see if i want something to drink. Aaagggg!
Yep, I am a female airline captain. While you would think I would be used to everyone expecting the captain to be a man, I am surprised Frazz chose to further that.
Back to Frazz’s second comment. The FO and the ATC sector controller would know the ground speed, but only the pilots (regardless of gender) would know the indicated speed. Trivia (serious,) from curious pilot: Below around 37,000 the 737 CFM-56 engine rotates once for every 7+ feet of forward motion, zero wind. Higher altitude, advancement/rotation drops as air density decreases, but temp remains constant, means engine rotates faster to produce sufficient thrust.
