    The Soviet Union’s R-7 Semyorka (SS-6 Sapwood), the world’s first successful ICBM, was in the advanced testing stages at the time this strip was published, as was the American SM-65 Atlas. Both ICBM systems wouldn’t become operational until more than a year later, in late 1959. Though the prospect of being bombed from space was likely already on everyone’s mind by then.
