I once read that it wasn’t until about the middle of the 19th century that medical doctors started doing more good than harm. Before that point, if you got sick, you’re odds were better if you didn’t go to a doctor.
I heard it was the middle of the 20th century (when antibiotics became available). Before then the average person was better off without “medicine” and “justice”.
Washington did not “give” 5 to 7 pints of blood. He was bled with leeches, a common medical treatment at the time. The blood was not donated to anyone.
During the 1930s Depression armadillos were called “Hoover Hogs” as a dig at the President. My study of that time in USofA history has lead me to conclude that the comparison is very demeaning & VERY unfair…to the ARMADILLOS! BTW, in 1920 a New York politician said of Hoover, “I wish we could make him President.” The man’s initials were FDR!
I don’t pick my nose that often so I guess I’m not average. I definitely don’t pick my nose when I’m sleeping.
I knew George Washington passed away from being bled to death to try to cure something, but I didn’t know what it was. They thought he had too much blood.
I like regular rabbits better because armadillos look ugly to me. I’ve seen one dead once.
Bleeding a fever might have had some value, but bed rest with heavy covers to induce sweating, and liquids would have done a lot less harm overall. An average man has about 12 points, George W may have one or two more as he was more than six feet tall. But wheter 12 or 14, taking up to half one’s blood or more would induce anemia to the point where the body was simply not getting sufficient blood to the organs and muscles, and various body organs shutting down. No wonder he died.
The nose thing- eww! That’s crazy. I never pick my nose (long nails!) so if I’m not picking my nose, someone else is picking up the slack by picking his nose 10x/hour? Actually, https://uselessinformation.org/nose/ has more accurate statistics. It was a small test group!

“Turtle-rabbit” (or the Aztec equivalent) makes perfect sense! I like it, just like I was impressed the first time I heard the term “alligator pear.”

Doctors of the time couldn’t be convinced we didn’t have 150 pounds of blood in our bodies and could stand to lose half of it….

Does it bother you that when you meet someone, and ask what he/she does, a doctor will respond “I practice medicine” ?
