I canceled my subscription TV service 7 years ago and never looked back. I refuse to pay 100+ per month just for the privilege of having access to the 10 channels I care in the slightest about. The cable and satellite companies can kiss my backside.
A quote by H. L. Mencken (1880-1956): To say he was slightly skeptical is to say the sun is only a light.
No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.
He goes on to say: The mistake that is made always runs the other way. Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more. This assumption is a folly.

We keep the most basic cable for local news and stuff. Otherwise, it all about streaming. There are still things we don’t watch, but we pay a lot less not to watch them.
People who want a la carte assume a lot of other people will choose the same channels as you, but what if they don’t? For example currently ESPN is the most costly channel and cost cable companies about $6 per subscriber and is included in most packages but only about 25% of subscribers ever watch it so if it was a la carte and only 20% elected to receive it they would have to raise the charge to $20+ which would lead to more people dropping it which would lead to ESPN needing to raise rates which would lead…. Even Fox News is watched by only about 3 million so currently if Fox is getting $1 from 50 million subscribers if they only had 3 million subscribers they would need to charge $15+.
In my area, over-the-air broadcasting is iffy at best. I can receive the three major networks of NBC, ABC, or CBS, but never simultaneously without adjusting the antenna. However, all the Spanish and Home Shopping broadcast channels come in clear as a bell. So I’m stuck with cable. (No, I didn’t forget Fox. I really don’t care if Fox comes in or not.)
