The power company will definitely notice when they switch to LED. They’ll have to take a generator off line.

That would be daylight. Other types of light, unfortunately, don’t seem to help. Running does set off the endorphines, though. You run during daylight …

Guys down the street throw the ‘on’ switch for their display and the power company caters lunch at the nearest 5-star. Rest of the year it’s just pizza off a truck.

When I was a kid in Miami (we’re talking eons ago) there was always a Christmas-lights spectacle that everybody drove over to see: two guys across the street from each other trying desperately to out-lavish each other. They were a former mayor, Abe Aronovitz, and a Chevy dealer, Anthony Abraham.

Why aren’t they wearing safety jackets and lights to be seen?

Frazz is sounding a little self righteous right now.

30,000 megawatts is more than enough to go back in time! If only they had a flux capacitor and could run at 88mph!

I do remember reading one time about a house that had so many lights and decorations that it confused pilots landing at a nearby airport.

Nothing will compare to Jennings Osborne’s Christmas light displays in Little Rock, Arkansas. They were reputedly visible from space. I saw them when I lived there. Amazing. I’d hate to have been one of this neighbors…even the Osborne family, themselves, would retire to a nice hotel in town during Christmas light time.https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/jennings-osborne-multimillionaire-known-for-extravagant-christmas-displays-dies-at-67/2011/07/31/gIQAVdhdmI_story.html?noredirect=on

I love a good, enthusiastic, over-the-top Christmas light display. I love a bad, enthusiastic, over-the-top Christmas light display just as much. But what I really seem to like is other people’s Christmas light displays. For whatever reason, I hope none of them too Scroogian, it seems to be all I can do to run a single string of white lights along the eaves. Quite poorly, this year, it turns out.

Two Christmases ago I picked up some new lights for next to nothing after the holiday. One Christmas ago, it was one distracting medical crisis after another all fall and winter at the Frazz Factory, so they didn’t get put up until this year, and thanks to an abrupt and stubborn onset of wintry weather, I put them up in a hurry with a storm moving in. My estimate was way off and I had a lot more light left over when I ran out of eave. But you can’t just snip lights like a piece of string; the excess had to go somewhere, so up the side roofline it went until I ran out of ladder. Alex Honnold I am not, nor am I a good candidate to go running off for a taller ladder I’ll use only if I ever make that mistake again, so I ran the lights back down the roofline and then down and back up the downspout. The end result is fine from one angle, a little vivid and garish from the other, and I’d say extremely useful for jet pilots who need to know which direction southeast is.

Last weekend we had that freakishly nice day we were supposed to have in October or November, and I actually caught myself thinking, hmm, maybe I should take the lights down before the weather gets really bad in January. I caught myself, and the lights are still up, and the whole-house compass is still indicating southeast. And the whole mess makes me smile a little, so clearly there is some kind of connection between mood and lumens.

It’s really thoughtful of the Lews’ to use full spectrum bulbs in their Christmas display.
