Trump Disciples believe that not only should torture be used, they will look for opportunities.

    Morality?

    Seriously?

    As if.

I’d love to have permission from Congress and DOJ to give him about three days worth of instruction and first hand experience as the subject of “enhanced interrogation” as practiced by the NVA, Mossad, ARVN, and well, CIA.

… during the European witch craze the Duke of Brunswick in Germany invited two Jesuit scholars to oversee the Inquisition’s use of torture to extract information from accused witches. “The Inquisitors are doing their duty. They are arresting only people who have been implicated by the confession of other witches,” the Jesuits reported. The duke was skeptical. Suspecting that people will say anything to stop the pain, he invited the Jesuits to join him at the local dungeon to witness a woman being stretched on a rack. “Now, woman, you are a confessed witch,” he began. “I suspect these two men of being warlocks. What do you say? Another turn of the rack, executioners.” The Jesuits couldn’t believe what they heard next. “No, no!” the woman groaned. “You are quite right. I have often seen them at the Sabbat. They can turn themselves into goats, wolves and other animals…. Several witches have had children by them. One woman even had eight children whom these men fathered. The children had heads like toads and legs like spiders.” Turning to the flabbergasted Jesuits, the duke inquired, “Shall I put you to the torture until you confess?”

One of these Jesuits was Friedrich Spee, who responded to this poignant experiment on the psychology of torture by publishing a book in 1631 entitled Cautio Criminalis, which played a role in bringing about the end of the witch mania and demonstrating why torture as a tool to obtain useful information doesn’t work.

In the previous Wuerker cartoon, AndyLit makes a very stupid unqualified statement.

    Torture works.

… Yes, the Japanese had a pretty good idea that it [Navajo code-talker language] was Navajo. This is why they tortured a Navajo named Joe Kieyoomia (1919–1997). He was captured in the Philippines and on the Bataan Death march. Later, he survived Nagasaki, too. He was a member of the New Mexico 200th Coast Artillery.

They first tortured him because they thought he was Japanese-American.* After several months, they accepted that he was Navajo.*

[Yeah, torture really showed the Japanese the truth, huh?]

Then, later, they came to him with a list of words (that they had tried to write down, so they could repeat what they were hearing on the radios), and asked him what they were.

He could confirm it was lists of Navajo words, but it was nonsense to him. 《He was not trained in the memorized code that had been developed in San Diego, in 1942; 421 were trained in the code》 Then they tortured him, and that ended any attempt to really break the code. Without a willing Navajo to work with, progress on the code-breaking project was stalled for a long time.

[Another win for torture! Err, well, maybe not…]

The difficult consonants, vowels, and the tonal structure made it impossible for most untrained people to even transcribe. The Japanese had been good at breaking every code before that.

Kieyoomia was in the Japanese POW camps for 43 months.

The good news is she doesn’t feel waterboarding is immoral, so problem solved. She will have prisoners tortured in your name.
