I think both ideas can be true simultaneously. I do not really see it as a conflict of ideas. One is about protecting the kid, the other is about protecting self…. and both are about protecting the family.
It’s becoming more and more ok. a friend of mine (straight christian lady) let’s her kids wear whatever they want to school, one of them has worn his Elsa dress as often as he can. His school took the chance to teach kids about accepting and loving people. It’s been beautiful to see
I think AJ’s school chums would probably beat him up. The whole “camp” thing has passed me by and I’m sure that dad and pop would let him be himself and not expose him to any extreme influences.

I should think that fear of being embarrassed by your kids would be a normal part of parenting. I know I embarrassed my parents more than once…
