My grandfather went to his grave refusing to believe man had set foot on the moon. He was neither ignorant nor prejudiced, it was just too much for him to comprehend. He was a boy when the Wright Brothers made their first flight. He saw the evolution of aircraft from those clumsy biplanes to supersonic jets. But man leaving his home planet was more than he or his world view could accept. However, he did once say to me that he wasn’t saying it didn’t happen, he was just saying he didn’t believe it. I loved that old man, and gave him and his opinion the respect I felt he deserved. But like I told him then, “Granpa, saying it doesn’t make it so.” Now that I’m almost the age Granpa was when he passed away, I can understand differing opinions, even tolerate points of view vastly different than my own. But saddens me to see younger people simply reject facts because they don’t like what those facts tell; e.g., the Holocaust never happened, climate change, etc. And saddest of all, our elected leadership is now of that ilk. Facts and science are faked. As personal opinions, I can tolerate that. But as foundations of policy, I’m terrified. Luckily, I’m old. So I may not live long enough to see how the last act of this tragedy plays out. Or worse, I may.
