To counter negativity in the comments, I have some suggestions to those who miss Guy Gilchrist:
If you miss his use of colour, or the claimed wholesomeness of his writing, go read Breaking Cat News – it’s warm and sweet and beautiful to look at.
If you miss his fetishisation of Fritzi, go through the archives of Liberty Meadows by Frank Cho, who both knows what a fantasy woman looks like and has the skill to portray that. Also get counselling.
If you don’t like cats, or you’re here for the country music references, I don’t think I can help you.
Right now I’m still trying to get into the new Nancy. So far with me, is 50/50. Although I like it when any character in a comic strip like this breaks the fourth wall.
We had the nice run. We had the wedding. We had the wake. Time to move on. Uncle Bob, out. “And if you’re tired of the same old story, oh turn some pages…” —-REO Speedwagon"
Ha! My first real laugh from the new artist/writer. I’m pleased to give her time to find her stride. Although I loved Guy’s art, I was pretty much done with the preachy, name-droppy, oh-yes-I-draw-Muppet-Babies reminders, etc.
Through the first three panels, this was reading like “Zippy the Pinhead” — though “Zippy” wouldn’t have ended with the mainstream gag in the fourth panel.
If this is the new standard, I’m outta here too. I have no particular fondness for any of the previous artists, but the above strip is just plain crap. I have seen better art from a 6-year old.
I taught myself to read so I could read Nancy as soon as my dad brought the paper home – in 1939. Ernie Bushmiller was the best. Guy kept the art pure although I was not that keen on his strips applauding music. Yeah, I Luv Nancy, but this is an insult to Ernie’s memory and creativity. Sayonara alt world Nancy.
Nancy goes meta. Yes, it’s not Bushmiller or Gilchrist, but each artist will interpret the characters in a new way — otherwise they’d just be recycling old jokes, the way other gag strips have done.
There’s a lot of ways to evolve a strip over decades: You can self-plagarize (like Peanuts in its later years), do only occasional strips (Doonesbury and FoxTrot only do Sundays now), retire and do reruns (two of the finest strips ever: Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side), you can try to pass the franchise on (some to family members, like Family Circus), or the syndicate may try to continue with someone unrelated (Brenda Starr, for example — gone now, but with a decently long run under its later authors) . Or, you can just become completely a merchandised item, like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other Disney characters.
Lucky for us, we can just stop reading it if we wish, and add another strip instead. Personally, I’m going to give this one more time.
The artwork is amateurish and the content is poor. I’ve been reading Nancy for more years than I care to admit to, but I’m done. Get a better artist and I’ll return.
I was never a fan of Bushmiller’s drawings, though I loved his gags. Gilchrist’s contribution to the strip was to flesh out the characters and make us care about them. The syndicate owns Nancy and can do whatever they want with it. That being said, the jury is still out for me. Right now, it isn’t even clear whether Jaimes is going to draw it in Bushmiller’s style or adopt a new style every week. See ya, tomorrow.
Bushmiller did a number of strips where Nancy is drawn in a weird style, which they’d explain as the result of him injuring his arm or something similar. This is keeping in the same spirit
This strip is pure trash. Truly stupid and a big mistake. The poor lady is over her head. Get somebody else with more talent. What a mistreatment of a great comic!
Me too, sorta. I just spent a couple of months re-reading all the old Gilchrist strips. I loved them because they were sweet and familiar. I even finally got all the pet names down: Poochie the pup, Rocky the cat and Goldie the Gold fish. And Sluggo’s pets are Flash the cat (because of his “battle” scar) and Sam the dog who always has a red white and blue scarf.Having said all that (TMI I know!) I am enjoying the new twist with Jaimes who is edgier and definitely more modern/current, but still funny in that “cut to the chase” Nancy way.

This was actually rather funny.
I think Jaimes anticipated some backlash to the change in style when she took over.

Not bad, just totally different than what I had the strip on my list for. Sorry but sadly moving on like Nancy and the gang.
