Must be all the Mentally ill playing violent video games and targeting the US because it is so great, again. Maybe the NRA can add more fear and power fantasies, will that help stop the school shootings?

All western, democratic countries have video games and mental illness. And have taken God out of the classroom. And teach Evolution. And have violent movies. And have crumbling families. And have bullied children. And have angry people. But THEY don’t have mass killings. Gee, if only we could discover the one way that America is different from all other countries, we’d understand why we alone have mass killings. Couldn’t be guns, of course, must be something else…..

There is NO CORRELATION between “violent video games” and “mass shootings” and there NEVER HAS BEEN! The ONLY correlation between “mass murder” and ANYTHING is the correlation between “mass murder”and “AVAILABILITY OF FIREARMS”! That and ONLY that is the only correlation ever proven! Ever!

The ONLY causality is between gun stores and the idiots with a lot more money than brains walking into them!

@Andylit, the issue, as it always has been, is MAGNITUDE, not whether it occurs at all. It is unquestionable that we have far, far, far more — like by three orders of magnitude more — than almost any other country in the world.

ALL the other explanations — mental health, etc., as per the cartoon — have debunked except one: we are the only nation with this much unfettered access to high-powered guns, and which owns collectively so many guns. The US makes up 4.4% of the world’s population but owns 42% of the guns.

Here’s an article that sums up the research nicely, NRA obscuration efforts notwithstanding.

There will always be people who are incited to seek violence in the most disturbing ways. Our government, as protectors of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”, has a duty to protect us. However, our government (not just the current administration) allows there to be a large, easily accessible supply of dangerous weapons in America. They say that to ban certain kinds of guns would infringe on property rights, but I believe allowing them to remain in supply infringes on our previously-said rights. Thus, the sensible action for a government to take would be to at least restrict access to powerful weapons. If the government is truly worried about property rights, another solution would be to ban the importation or production of dangerous weapons, and allow them to fade away over time

The right wingers lie that shooters look for easy gun free targets.

Actual studies show the shooters seek out the people and places where they have an emotional investment. They want to show everyone how much they were hurt.

Ban the AR-15 the weapon of choice for school mass murderers.

Boycott the NRA and don’t vote for gun extremists.

Sandy Hook shooter Lanza was obsessed with one video game at the local theater. The manager often had to unplug it to get him to leave. It was Dance Dance Revolution.

Brass Orchid: Are we forgetting the correlation between mass shootings and “Gun-Free Zones”? It’s a negative correlation. All of Canada is a gun free zone and there are very few mass shootings.
