I graduated University three years ago and I STILL have nightmares about forgetting classes or homework…

My dad didn’t seem to like Ed much so we were usually watching another channel. I do know that back when my bedtime was 8PM that Dad watched “Maverick.” I could hear some of it but it is only in the past ten years that I have seen any of the shows. They’re pretty good and even my grandchildren don’t hyperventilate if I have one on the set.

It’s funny. Back when there were only three B+W channels people were exposed to new ideas and acts via variety shows like Ed’s.

Today we have so many choices that we can easily ignore anything new and different.

Everything was live then. Loved “Your Show of Shows”with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. Comic geniuses.

Before she died, Joan Rivers said that she had friends her age who worked in show business and friends who never worked in show business. She said that the friends who worked in show biz were always talking about new things, new acts, up coming shows etc, while the others only wanted to talk about the past.

My Sunday night homework alarm bell went of during the Bonanza theme song. Whenever I see a rerun, I get the same feeling…doom!

Boy, did this bring back memories ! Not just of undone homework on Sunday nights ( an all-too-frequent occurrence ) but of the Sunday rituals in our household – starting with Sunday Mass in the morning and ending with The Ed Sullivan Show at night.

Many years later, I worked in NYC on Captain Kangaroo ( don’t ask ! ). The studio was right around the corner from Ed Sullivan Theatre where the Ed Sullivan show was done live on Sunday nights. We used to watch some of the weekday rehearsals from our production booth. Some of those rehearsals were hysterical ( and not on purpose. ) I remember a drunken Lee Marvin trying to sing “I Was Born Under A Wandering Star” with the Yale Glee Club. Priceless !
