The kid is good…and bored. This is mental exercise to him. Dennis the Menace isn’t half as smart, but still plays the same game for fun and because he is irascible.
Statistically speaking, I suppose “Huh?” may or may not be the universal median follow-up question nor is it likely the mean follow-up question, if there is even such thing. But I strongly suspect it’s the mode.

My immediate response would have been “Now that it’s thawed, are you gonna need fresh pants?” Or “Please stay standing, then. I don’t want you scratching the chairs.” Or maybe, “All right, but stay away from the magnets.”

Ok, and what happened to Caulfield’s eyes? The’re blue! Most times the’re an impish shade of reddish brown.
